Elfriede was born in Bremerhaven, Germany and lived in Chicago, Oak Lawn and Kenosha, Wisconsin. She taught Sunday School at Trinity Lutheran Church and Mt. Zion Evangelical Church in Oak Lawn. She volunteered at Daybreak Senior Center and was the treasurer and tour planner for Paddock Lake Seniors. She was an avid gardener, loved to knit, crochet and embroider.

During his journey with Alzheimer’s, Mike expressed appreciation for his doctors, Dr. James Mastrianni & Dr. Adam Cifu; his caregivers from Aishling Companion Home Care; and his devoted counselors Gina Lavorata-O’Hehir & Tom Gibbs. Mike was a proud graduate of Visitation Catholic Grade School, Mount Carmel High School and the University of Notre Dame. He served his country with distinction as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps. He retired from the City of Chicago as the Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Aviation at Midway Airport. His dedication to Mount Carmel was legendary. He was recognized with the Mount Carmel Man of the year Award in 1977 and was inducted into the Mount Carmel Hall of Fame.

Edward J. Slowinski

Edward J. Slowinski, 92, passed away peacefully in the early hours of February 16th, 2019 at Franciscan Village in Lemont Illinois.

 He was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 17th, 1926. At the age of 18, he entered the U.S. Navy, and served on a destroyer escort ship during WWII where he visited many ports of call throughout the world.

 After the Navy, he went on to work at Sargent and Lundy Engineers, in Chicago, as a draftsman where he designed nuclear power stations. In 1948, he married Dorothy Lignell and settled in Evergreen Park where they raised their 5 children. Edward enjoyed many hobbies throughout the years from candle making, gardening his many Dahlias and managing and coaching girl’s Khoury League softball in Evergreen Park for over twenty years.

 Edward also entertained thousands of people performing magic at various venues in the area, as Eddie Sann the Magic Man and as Swinky the clown. He and Dorothy travelled throughout the country to attend numerous magic conventions over the years. He never went anywhere without a deck of cards to perform tricks, and balloons, to make various animals for children. Edward also enjoyed drawing in his younger years and took up painting later in life. His paintings can be found in the homes of his children, grandchildren and many others to which he shared them with.

Edward is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Dorothy (nee Lignell), of Lemont, Illinois; his children, Thomas (Merry Jo) Slowinski, Mary Jean (Joe) Ambrosini, Karen Slowinski, Elizabeth (Bruce) Kleckler, and Joseph (Mary) Slowinski. He was the cherished grandfather to Jennifer (Ron), Todd (Amy), Michelle (Johnny), Matt (Nessa), Steven (April), Gus, Joe, Grace, Lily, Matthew, Jacob and Zachary. He was a great grandfather of ten, and the fond Uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Richard P. Soso, age 69, Retired CFD, passed away surrounded by his family on February 11.

Rich was the beloved husband of Joan, nee Hallisy, loving Dad of Katie (Tom Webb), RJ (Meghan) and Maureen (PJ) Kadowaki. Dear Dida of Morgan and Lizzie. Rich was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Richard Soso and was best friend and brother to Daniel (Lorie). Rich spent his life surrounded by loving grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends. Once you were Rich’s friend, you were in it for life. Starting with his Rockwell family, then at Morgan Park High School, at Rainbow Beach and South Shore Beach as a Lifeguard Captain, and at Ridge Park as a Swimming Coach, Rich made lifelong friends. After graduating from Southern Illinois University, where he was a member of the TKE Fraternity, Rich worked at Hines Veteran’s Hospital as a Corrective Therapist and as a teacher for Chicago Public Schools, before joining the Chicago Fire Department in 1977. Rich was a 40 year member of Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2, a 50 year member of the Croatian Fraternal Union and a regular of the Dobro Jutro Breakfast Club. Our family wants to thank the compassionate and caring nursing staff of Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood would be appreciated.
